Empowering Children: Teaching Kids to Love Their Natural Hair in Biased Environments

Our girls and boys deserve classrooms where hair is not a discipline issue.

At home:

  • Story time with characters wearing locs and braids.
  • Hair rituals that centre choice: “How do you want to wear your crown today?”
  • Celebrate maintenance as a skill, parting, moisturising, tying scarves like pros.

At school:

  • Send a one-page “Hair Care 101” to teachers, educate, don’t ask permission.
  • If policy conflicts arise, respond in writing with references to anti-discrimination standards.
  • Encourage clubs that celebrate cultural styles and history.

Tech for parents:

  • Share a secure photo log of protective styles with teachers for PE and swimming days. Prepare, prevent, protect.
